Terms of Travel

All costs are based upon lowest current rates unless stated. Airfare and student tuition rates are subject to change.

Students may purchase their own airfare on any airline they please so long that they land on the same date, June 1, in Rome as faculty or students may book the same flight itinerary as the faculty.

Room rates are per person for a total of 15 nights (unless otherwise specified). Room rates have been negotiated for the entire group, and all students must stay in student-assigned accommodations.

Student attendance is required at all daily class meetings on campus and in Italy. Outside of scheduled class activities, students are free to explore Rome and experience life there.

All travel expenses are listed below and payment plans are available to pay travel expenses ahead of time (excluding airfare). Tuition is not part of the travel expenses and must be made to the university when Summer course payment is due. Financial Aid can be used to pay course tution fees if eligible, (please speak to a Financial Aid representative to find out if you are eligible).

Expenses are estimated based on 1 European Euro at current market conversion rate.

Prices may vary depending on the travel market with airline industry in relation to COVID.


Tuition: $981.85 per 3-credit hour course x 2 courses = $1,963.70 (estimated).

Financial Aid, if eligible, may pay tuition, as students must be enroll in 6-credit hours in the summer to be eligible. Please contact the Financial Aid office for further information on summer eligibility. 

Maymester (on campus) 3-credit hours
Summer 1 (Rome, Italy) 3-credit hours 

 

Meals

Meal costs are not included in the estimated Program Fees because students' meal habits will differ.


Payment Plan

To enroll in the Layers of Rome course a $550 deposit is required to hold a place in the class. The student’s place will be reserved on a first come, first served basis once accepted in the program and deposit. The course is limited to 12 spaces. Students can make payments through a special website link established by the Study Abroad Office. Starting in the fall, students will be able to pay their total cost in 4 payments of $550 each. All payments must be made, and the total cost paid by the end of May 1st.


Scholarship Opportunities

The Study Abroad office and the Liberal Arts Dean’s office provides scholarship funds of up to $2,000.00 to $3,000.00 as a reimbursement to help with some of the travel cost of the program. Call or email the Humanities program for more details on the these scholarships.

Financial Aid

If you are eligible for Financial Aid you may also apply your aid to the tuition cost of the program. Because the program is during the summer and is a 6-credit course, students can apply financial aid to their tuition cost if they qualify. To find out more information on study abroad and financial aid click HERE.


Passports

Applying for passports at the U.S. post office: All students traveling abroad are required to have a valid passport. Passports for United States citizens can be purchased at the main U.S. Post Office or at the Westside Post Office on Remcon Road. Passport Applications should be completed at least twelve weeks before traveling to allow for processing time.

Applying for passports on campus: The UTEP Office of International Programs located at 203 Union East is now an Application Acceptance Facility for both new and renewal U. S. Passports (The same services are also offered at the U.S. post office). Their hours of operation are as follows:
Monday and Tuesday: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Wednesday–Friday: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

To apply for a passport you will need to provide the following:

  • (2) 2x2 passport photos
  • Proof of citizenship-certified certificate of birth or naturalization certificate
  • (2) checks or money orders, one made out for $130.00 (adults) or $80 (for children under age 16), and the other made out for the $35 processing fee. Cash is NOT accepted.
